I would love to be able to afford PS but really I dont think I need it. GIMP seems to do everything I need and then some. So why spend the $500 on an app when I get all that I need using Gimp
Just my 2 cents.

Gimp is okay but try to do some serious color correction with it. You simply cant. Also their filter's seem to be a bit buggy and gradient overlays always seem to need work. I cant even compare Gimp to Photoshop they are just 2 different animals.
I tried Gimp once, uninstalled it pretty quickly. I felt cheap using itNo seriously didnt like it at all. Was really confusing compared to photoshop.
PS is definitely expensive, it would still be expensive even if it was $200. But I wouldn't switch it to others.
I have both Gimp and Photoshop, but I do tend to use Gimp more often. I also use Paint.Net for smaller stuff (Paint.Net is fantastic, and is my replacement for MSPaint 100%)
Gimp is free great tool, it has the same feature as photoshop like making local retouches, sharpening and other image corrections, do color and exposure/lightness corrections with a broad range of dialogs and tools, do a mask on area or layer and of course special effects for image. Not bad for free stuff.
