If you've not seen one of the vehicles then they're just normal cars fitted with cameras that take pictures of the surroundings every few meters, they're quite hard to miss with the huge cameras.

The images that have been taken by the vehicles are of a good quality and add another great service to Google Maps.
Google have also tried very hard to maintain peoples identities by blurring out all people and vehicle registrations that have been captured within the images taken.
The following screenshot gives on example of how simple Street View is to use, when using Google Maps as normal you simply drag the person above the zoom function onto the map in the desired place, it even offers a small preview of the location so you don't have to load the full image. Once in the right position you let go of the mouse click and you are taken to a larger image of the location you selected. From then you can swivel around 360 degrees to view your surroundings and also zoom in for further detail.
I wonder if they have any plans to redo the images in a higher hd resolution in the near future?

I decided to take a look at the locations where have I lived, I found they are all pictured very well and in great detail, the only slight issue I came across was a bus had that parked in front of a busy location in London which made it kind of difficult to view the actual location.
Here is a picture from Street View of the area in which I live:
