For years I'd never considered why both file types existed for files written in the hyper text markup language (better know as html) so I looked into it ..
The reason behind this extension is that when windows was originally developed, it only supported file extensions with 3 characters: exe, avi, txt
This meant html had to be shortened to .htm to work with all operating systems, as technology grew .html was made available and now most people tend to save their files as .html which makes sense.
Both are still available and changing from one to the other has no affect on your document so if you ever have to edit a .html file on an ancient operating system (not too sure why this would ever happen) then you now have a soloution to any problems that could arise.
